Is electricity in our nervous system?
Information in our nervous system is carried in the form of electrical and chemical signals by highly complex cells called neurons and our bodies contain 100 billion neurons, they form a part of our nervous tissue (the brain, the spinal cord and the nerves).
Every single nerve transmits electric impulses, it makes our heart beat and our lungs respirate. Elements (or salts otherwise called ‘electrolytes’) in our bodies like sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium all have a specific electrical charge. Almost all of our cells can use these charged elements (electrolytes) called ions to generate electricity.
We have 50 trillion cells in our body, each one contains 0.7volts and they vibrate at a very specific frequency. That’s 3.5 trillion volts in our bodies.
Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2003 - Two important winners
In 2003, two US scientists were awarded the Nobel prize in Chemistry for discoveries concerning channels, gates and valves in cell membranes which are needed for cells to function. Peter Agre won for ‘the discovery of water channels’. He discovered a protein, Aquaporin-1, which allows only water molecules to enter and exit cell membranes.
Roderick MacKinnon won for understanding ‘structural and mechanistic studies of ion channels’. His research not only identified the basic structure of the potassium ion channel, but he also discovered how the electrical charge of a cell’s membrane determines the open or closed position of an ion channel. And he also discovered a “selectivity filter” which allows the correct ions (sodium, potassium, calcium or chloride) to pass through a channel of a protein. His research greatly refined the understanding of how these selective ion channels regulate nerve signal firing and other crucial bodily functions.
In other words, these two guys found out two key things that unlock the fundamental process of life.
First, they worked out how salts (ions) and water are transported in and out of cells in our body. So now we better understand how our liver eliminates waste or our kidneys recover water (separating out salts) from urine. And secondly, they worked out how electrical signals in our nerve cells are generated and spread.
Their work has helped us understand the structure of many diseases that are caused by poor functioning of water and ion channels eg. Kidneys, heart, muscles and nervous system. The prognosis for such diseases as Cystic Fibrosis, Heart Arrhythmias (uncoordinated heart electrical impulses), Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s and other inherited and acquired electrical signalling diseases will improve in coming years as scientists continue to learn to remedy or prevent them.
